Barbara Kruger

Barbara Kruger is an American conceptual artist, and is considered to be part of the so-called Pictures Generation, a grouping of artists concerned with the appropriation of images from consumer media and which includes Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman and John Baldessari amongst others.

Also grouped with feminist postmodern artists such as Jenny Holzer and Sherrie Levine, as well as Cindy Sherman, she uses mass communication and advertising to explore gender and identity. Her work often consists of black-and-white photographs overlaid with declarative captions in red-and-white including the prounouns you; your; I; we; they. These captions seek to question cultural constructions such as power, sexuality and identity.
