Ossie Clark, one of the most influential British fashion designers of the 1960s, is equally remembered as the subject of one of Britain’s greatest paintings: Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy by David Hockney, in the collection of the Tate Gallery where it is counted amongst their most visited works.
Ossie designed Bianca Jagger’s wedding suit, and editions of Vogue from the mid-60s to the early-70s were rarely published without featuring his designs, often modelled by Twiggy, Jane Birkin, Charlotte Rampling or Pattie Boyd.
He had known David Hockney since the late 1950s and the two had traveled to New York together, both of them making valuable connections in the fashion, art and entertainment communities that would later help them become international stars.
Hockney drew and painted Ossie several times over two decades but, of these portraits, very few remain in private hands.

David Hockney has major retrospective exhibitions throughout 2017 and 2018, at Tate Britain, the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
