Richard Hamilton

Since 1968, Hamilton has offered artist friends a polaroid camera and asked them to take a picture of him. There are 128 of these polaroid prints, and the artists whom Hamilton met and who became involved in this ongoing project form a directory of the greatest of the last half of the 20th Century: Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, Francis Bacon, Gilbert & George, Joseph Beuys. They are small but strong works, each one presented simply and mounted with the name of the artist and the date of execution. Hamilton's inventive take on the self-portrait, developing the concept in a disposable but ultimately impressive way is typical of Hamilton's resourceful and imaginative brand of pop art.

For Hamilton's 2010 Serpentine Gallery exhibition these polaroids, which were becoming time stained due to the unstable nature of the original film, were remastered using digital technology. Just one copy of each polaroid was made for sale, and these were raffled off to raise funds for the Serpentine Gallery itself.
