Howard Hodgkin

To the hasty glance, Hodgkin's works are purely abstract, however very often they are anything but. In Bleeding Hodgkin evokes the exuberance and inventiveness of 18th-century Indian chintz hangings, which were large enough to cover entire walls. This relationship explains the Victoria and Albert Museum's ownership of an example of this lithograph, given the many chintz hangings in the Museum's collection. Bleeding is also an interesting example of the contribution that professional printers can make to an image. Hodgkin was very particular about the hand colouring of this work and demonstrated his wishes to Cinda Sparling, who then, in the printing process, went on to contribute her own marks.
