Figure Studies

Stanley Spencer

This sheet of figures studies, although single-sided, is particularly noteworthy for having been sketched on the reverse of a letter from Humphrey Brooke, Secretary of the Royal Academy, dated April 1953. The document is a covering letter for the enclosure of tickets, and request for ticket Nominations, for the forthcoming private view of the 1953 Summer Exhibition on May 1st. It contains the wonderful note "It is to be understood that these Nominations are solely for persons of distinction."

The letter is also annotated with two lists of paintings, presumably shortlists for works potentially to be included in the exhibition.
