Josef Albers Original Paintings
Josef Albers made his first Homage to the Square painting in 1950, and continued his investigation of this concept until the end of his life. At ARCHEUS / POST-MODERN we buy and sell unique works from this celebrated series and usually have at least one fine example in stock and available to purchase. Josef Albers holds the unique distinction of having been an instructor at the influential Bauhaus school in Weimar and, later, a teacher at the equally influential Black Mountain college in North Carolina. Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square paintings are held in museums worldwide and are regarded as hugely significant in the history and development of hard-edged abstraction. In 2017, a Homage to the Square painting by Albers, for sale by auction at Sotheby’s, reached a record price of $3million.
