Study for Homage to the Square: Me Too

Josef Albers

Study for Homage to the Square: Me Too, of 1969, is a strongly premeditated composition by Albers, exploring a particular relationship between red, orange and yellow. Albers infrequently mixed colours in his paintings, and very rarely did after 1955, preferring to work with pure colours straight from the tube. The colour notations on the reverse of this painting reveal that he mixed cadmium red with two different oranges in the central square in order to create a very precise tone of red. This process is particularly rare in Albers' work of this period.
