The Round Lake II

Hughie O'Donoghue

The Round Lake II was started in 1991, but it was two years until the artist took up the plate again to finish it. A much more complex image strains the relationship of this work and The Round Lake to the point where it is difficult to regard them in any way, apart from title, as a pair. The head of the crow in The Round Lake II, only visible after a little study, seems more closely related in result, if not in conception, to the snake's head in O'Donoghue's photogravure work of 1989, Recoil. The final state of printing of this work settles on three very different plates: brown/pink over blue collé; a blue/black drawing plate; a blue mask.
