Landscape

Lucian Freud

Freud's work Landscape of 1993 is one of only two small-scale etchings of plants in his garden made by the artist, the other being Thistle of 1985. Both serve as precursors for the huge and ambitious works Garden in Winter of 1997-9 and The Painter's Garden of 2003-4.
There are many paintings from the mid-1970s by Freud which involve still-life presented within the context of landscape, but some of his concerns as a painter and as an etcher in the years 1993-4 were to examine the subjects that he rendered in much closer detail than had previously been his habit. Whether depicting the portrait head of Leigh Bowery, or a detail from a book lying open in his studio, Freud's etchings of this short period have a considerable intimacy in common.
