Ed Ruscha

The early 1970s were a prolific period for Ruscha. In addition to his activities in Europe, he continued to make prints in Los Angeles. During his 1969 residence at Tamarind, he had formed a working relationship with Jean Milant, one of the workshop’s printers, who had decided he wanted to open his own shop. With the encouragement of Tamarind’s June Wayne, a few loans, and a tip from Ruscha about an available property on Manhattan Place in Hollywood, Milant established Cirrus Editions and Cirrus Gallery. Unlike other workshops in the Los Angeles area, Cirrus made it a priority from the outset to print and publish editions with California artists. Ruscha made twenty editions at Cirrus between 1970 and 1974.
