An evolving visual and conceptual device Ruscha has used in his work over the years is the pairing of text imagery with backgrounds he has referred to [in a 1998 Getty Center lecture] as "suggestors". Whether concrete images or simply atmospheric environments for his words, these backdrops are evocative in themselves and can create dynamic tension because they often contradict the language with which they share the visual space. In the late 1980s, Ruscha began to supplement his wordless silhouette images with prints that paired text with suggestor. One recurring motif of these editions took its cue from the use of light and shadow (or lack thereof) in the silhouette works. The artist presented images that appeared as though light from a casement window had thrown gridded patterns across a surface. The patterns of light in..the window...images mimic the spatial form of Standard Station and other Ruscha works that embrace a sharply angled perspective.
